Why doing it all won't work forever, especially when it's time to scale

Writer: MJ Rosario-MalubayMJ Rosario-Malubay

Let’s have a little heart-to-heart about scaling your business. 💕

Whether you’re a therapist, coach, or service-based entrepreneur, there’s a good chance you’ve done a lot of DIY-ing to get to where you are today!

From creating your website to handling social media content and emails, it’s easy to see why it feels like a personal victory to tackle it all yourself.

But as your business grows, so does the workload—and this is when DIY just won’t cut it anymore. 🤚

Let’s talk about WHY it’s time to consider working smarter (and less harder), and how you can step into the next scaling phase with clarity and confidence.

💡 Time is still money (it's the new currency)

You’ve heard this a thousand times, but it’s worth repeating.

Every hour spent trying to figure out email automation or crafting the perfect Reel should be spent doing what you do best—helping your clients!

Your role as a therapist or coach is about connection, healing, and growth, but DIY-ing digital marketing takes precious time away from what only you can do for your business.

For example:

  • Imagine you’re spending hours creating a newsletter but end up only getting through half of it before your next client session.

    • That’s valuable time you could have used to meet with clients, develop new programs, or simply recharge to show up as your best self.

Scaling your business means protecting your energy and focusing on what only YOU can do.

It’s time to delegate the tasks that drain your time and let experts handle the rest.

Of course, this is easier said than done because it takes time, effort, energy (and everything in between), but think about the long-term gains and benefits. 😉

💡 Being consistent is important

The digital world moves fast, and I mean reaaallly FAST!

Social media algorithms are always changing, email open rates depend on regularity, and your online presence needs to be consistently on point.

If you’ve been taking a DIY approach, you know how easy it is to fall behind or let your posts go “whenever you get to them.”

But that “post when you can” mentality leads to chaos, and your audience can feel it.

Here’s how inconsistency can show up:

  • If you’re sporadically posting on social media, you risk losing touch with your audience.

    • For instance, you post 2x-3x a week but then disappear for 1-2 months not because you want to, but because you just can't.

    • Your followers might feel like you’re not serious about engaging with them, or potential collaborators might be hesitant to partner with you.

  • Consider your email marketing.

    • If you’re inconsistent with sending out newsletters or reminders about your services, you’ll miss the opportunity to nurture those relationships.

    • That one client who was on the fence about booking might get distracted by someone else’s consistent and engaging emails.

When you have a dedicated team supporting your marketing efforts, you can maintain a consistent presence even during busy times.

You can keep your content fresh and relatable whether or not your schedule allows for it.

💡 Alignment with what your community needs

One of the best parts of planning content is the chance to deeply consider what your audience cares about most.

  • What common questions are your clients asking during sessions, or is your online community DMing/commenting to you about?

  • What information or misconceptions about mental health need addressing?

A team that monitors these can help create and strategize a well-thought-out content calendar that lets you tackle these topics head-on so not only are you visible, you're topics are also relevant.

Example: If you notice many asking about managing stress during the start of the year, back-to-school, holidays, etc. — plan a series of posts offering actionable tips like:

  • Grounding techniques for [insert event/situation]

  • How to set and maintain healthy boundaries with family

By addressing these needs, you’re not just posting for the sake of it, you’re developing trust and engagement.

💡 Resilience against burnout

As a mental health professional, you know how important it is to prioritize self-care. You know this better than I do! 😉

DIY-ing everything may have worked initially, but as your client list and responsibilities grow, so does the weight of handling every little detail yourself.

Some examples:

  • You find yourself staying late to schedule posts, only to wake up exhausted for your morning clients.

  • You push off personal time because your to-do list is packed with backend admin tasks that someone else could handle.

Scaling means recognizing that just because you can do everything, doesn’t mean you should.

Delegating allows you to protect your well-being while still growing your business sustainably.

Some unsolicited advice that might be helpful if you're considering hiring a team or someone

Handing over the reins can feel like giving away a piece of yourself. I get it. 💖

This fear is valid and comes from a place of wanting to protect what you’ve built, as you SHOULD!

But staying stuck in this fear can hold you back from growing in ways you never imagined, and I guess you're already feeling/thinking about this.

One of the biggest reasons for this fear? LOSS OF CONTROL.

😔 You're worried that someone else won’t understand your voice, message, or audience as well as you do.

😔 The fear of trusting someone else with your ‘baby’—the thing you’ve nurtured and grown from the ground up.

Overcoming these starts with finding the RIGHT PERSON/TEAM to trust with your social media, as well as other digital marketing needs.

Even if you work with seasoned teams, there's no immediate guarantee that it will work.

✅ The right person/team gets your vision, listens to you (not just hears you out), and can execute with the same care and dedication as you would.

While these will never be easy, these fears will begin to fade, and you’ll realize that letting go doesn’t mean losing control—it means gaining more time to focus on what only YOU can do for your business 😉

Scaling your business is a big step, and hiring support should feel like a smart, strategic move—not just another investment.

Take your time, assess your needs, and check your budget.

The goal isn’t to outsource for the sake of it but to make intentional choices that truly support your growth.

I hope this blog gives you clarity as you explore your options—whether now or in the future!
